Six retired friends from Minneapolis planned a January golf escape to St. George, Utah. Five days, four rounds, one rest day for Zion National Park — and temperatures 50 degrees warmer than home. At a cost that made the whole group wonder why they hadn''t done this years ago.

Day 1: Coral Canyon — Ease Into It

We flew into Vegas, rented an SUV, and were at our rental house near Sand Hollow by 2 PM. Afternoon tee time at Coral Canyon — wide fairways, red rock views, and the most forgiving course in St. George. Nobody rushed. We played from the forward tees (5,100 yards) and all six of us finished before sunset. First dinner: steaks on the grill at the house while watching the sun set over red cliffs.

Course Rating: 8/10 Widest fairways in the area — ideal for the first round after travel. The red rock backdrop is stunning and the layout rewards smart play over raw power. Great choice for senior groups who want scenery without punishment.

Day 2: The Ledges — Stay-and-Play Dreams

Morning round at The Ledges. The front nine was links-style and approachable. The back nine through Snow Canyon took our breath away. Two of us said it was the most beautiful back nine they''d ever played — and between us we''ve played 40+ years of golf. The villas at The Ledges had us talking about moving our annual trip here permanently.

Course Rating: 8.5/10 The mountaintop setting is breathtaking — Snow Canyon views from every hole. The elevation changes are significant, so riding is recommended. The stay-and-play villas on the fairways are the best lodging option in all of St. George.

Day 3: Zion National Park — The Rest Day

We drove 45 minutes to Zion. Canyon Overlook Trail — 1 mile round trip, jaw-dropping views, manageable for everyone. Lunch in Springdale. Scenic drive through the canyon. Back to the house by 4 PM for hot tub and cocktails. The non-golf day was everyone''s second-favorite day of the trip.

Day 4: Sand Hollow — The Highlight

The cliff-edge back nine at Sand Hollow. That''s all you need to know. We played it twice — the first time in awe, the second time actually trying to score. Hole 15 ("Devil''s Throat") produced two lost balls and zero complaints. The guys from Minnesota keep a framed photo of that hole in the clubhouse back home.

Course Rating: 9/10 The highlight of the trip. Links-style layout with red sand dunes and lava rock. Conditioning was impeccable in January. The back nine is one of the best stretches of golf in Utah. Worth building your entire trip around.

Day 5: Sunbrook — The Farewell

Quick 18 at Sunbrook before heading to the airport. The Blackrock nine through lava formations was a perfect finale. Total cost per person for 5 nights: about $780 including everything. We''ve already booked next January.

Course Rating: 7.5/10 Best value in St. George — 27 holes means you could play all day for one green fee. The three nines are distinctly different. The Pointe nine has the best views. Perfect farewell round when you want to play relaxed.
