Las Vegas to St. George Golf Road Trip — Complete Guide

Two hours northeast of the Las Vegas strip, past the casino-lined exit at Mesquite, through the Virgin River Gorge, and into the red rock canyon country of Southern Utah — that's where the best golf within driving distance of Vegas is hiding. The I-15 corridor from Las Vegas to St. George passes through 22 golf courses across two destinations, and the smart play is to hit them both on the same trip. This is the complete road trip guide: what to play, where to stop, where to stay, and how to turn a Vegas flight into the best golf trip of the year.

Black Desert Resort in St. George — Utah's #1 course, PGA TOUR host, and exactly 2 hours from the Las Vegas airport.

The Drive: Las Vegas → Mesquite → St. George

Segment Distance Drive Time What's There
Las Vegas → Coyote Springs 55 miles ~60 min Jack Nicklaus course — first possible golf stop
Las Vegas → Mesquite 80 miles ~80 min 9 courses, casino resorts, private mansions
Mesquite → St. George 37 miles ~40 min Through Virgin River Gorge (stunning drive)
Las Vegas → St. George 120 miles ~2 hours 13 courses, Zion NP, resorts, 127 vacation rentals

The I-15 northeast from Vegas is one of the most scenic highway drives in the American West. After you clear the suburbs, the desert opens up into wide valley views. At Mesquite, you cross into a canyon oasis with casinos and golf courses clustered in a river valley. Between Mesquite and St. George, the Virgin River Gorge cuts through towering cliff walls — a 30-minute stretch that feels like driving through a national park. Then you emerge into the red rock landscape of Southern Utah with St. George's 13 courses spread across the valley.

Stop 1: Coyote Springs (60 Minutes from Vegas)

Your first potential golf stop is Coyote Springs — a Jack Nicklaus design with 11 lakes, a 22-acre practice facility, and a Golf Digest Top 100 Public ranking. It sits in complete isolation (no housing, no development) about an hour from the strip. Groups with early flights often land, grab their rental, and play Coyote Springs before continuing to Mesquite for the evening. The 7,471-yard layout with slope 149 is a serious test — start your trip with a challenge.

Stop 2: Mesquite (80 Minutes from Vegas)

Mesquite is the first major golf destination on the corridor. Nine courses anchored by two icons: Wolf Creek (bucket-list canyon spectacle, slope 154) and Conestoga (Troon-managed strategic test, canyon + traditional). Three casinos (CasaBlanca, Virgin River, Eureka) provide nightlife and lodging, while private mansions like Golfer's Paradise sleep 16+ for groups that want their own compound. Everything in Mesquite is 10 minutes apart.

Best for: Groups that want casino entertainment, the Wolf Creek experience, and a compact destination where you never drive more than 10 minutes. See our Vegas-to-Mesquite guide for the detailed breakdown.

Stop 3: St. George (2 Hours from Vegas)

St. George is where the road trip levels up. Thirteen courses including five that are nationally ranked: Black Desert (Utah #1, PGA TOUR host), Sand Hollow (Utah #1 public, cliff-edge drama), Entrada (private stay-and-play), The Ledges (on-course villas, Snow Canyon views), and Copper Rock (toughest test, sleeper pick).

Lodging options include 127 vacation rentals ranging from 2-bedroom condos to 6-bedroom luxury estates, plus resort properties at Black Desert, The Ledges, and Sand Hollow. The area also puts you 45 minutes from Zion National Park and 10 minutes from Snow Canyon State Park — giving non-golfers (and golfers on rest days) world-class activities.

Best for: Groups that want maximum course variety, nationally ranked courses, stay-and-play resorts, and proximity to national parks. See our St. George golf guide for the full breakdown.

Logistics: What You Need to Know

Rental car: You need one. There's no public transit or rideshare between these destinations. An SUV or minivan works best for groups of 4-8 with golf bags. Most rental agencies at LAS have clubs-friendly vehicles.

Vegas night: Many groups plan one night in Vegas on arrival or departure. Fly in midday, spend the evening on the strip, then drive out the next morning. Or reverse it — play golf all week and hit Vegas the last night before an evening flight.

St. George airport option: SGU has direct flights from several western cities (Denver, LA, Salt Lake, Phoenix). If your group is focused on St. George courses, flying directly eliminates the 2-hour drive from Vegas entirely.

The Virgin River Gorge: The 30-minute stretch between Mesquite and St. George through the gorge is spectacular — towering cliff walls, a winding canyon, and views that rival any scenic byway. It's worth doing even if you don't play courses in both destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is St. George worth the extra hour vs. just playing Mesquite?

For trips of 3+ days, yes — emphatically. St. George has 13 courses including five nationally ranked options that Mesquite doesn't match in sheer variety. The 40-minute drive between destinations is scenic (Virgin River Gorge) and easy. Our most popular package is the two-destination trip that covers both.

Can I play golf on the way from Vegas to St. George?

Yes — Coyote Springs is 60 minutes from Vegas and directly on the I-15 route. Play a morning round there and continue to Mesquite or St. George afterward. It's an excellent way to start the trip.

Should we base in one location or move between them?

For 3-day trips, pick one base (Mesquite or St. George). For 4+ days, we recommend splitting: 2 nights in Mesquite + 2 nights in St. George. The move takes 40 minutes and gives you fresh lodging, new courses, and a different vibe for the second half of the trip.

What about the drive in winter?

The I-15 corridor is low-elevation desert — snow is rare on this route. The Virgin River Gorge can occasionally have weather in deep winter (December-January), but it's typically clear. The highway is well-maintained and heavily traveled. Summer heat is more of a concern than winter weather.

Do you coordinate the entire road trip?

Everything. Tee times across both destinations, lodging in both cities (or one), restaurant recommendations, Zion activities if desired, and the optimal day-by-day routing based on your group size and interests. One quote, one contact. We make the road trip seamless.
