Mesquite, Nevada and St. George, Utah sit 40 minutes apart on I-15, share the same Las Vegas airport, and both offer world-class desert golf. But they're completely different destinations. Mesquite has 9 courses anchored by the bucket-list canyon spectacle of Wolf Creek. St. George has 13 courses including Utah's #1 ranked course (Black Desert), the #1 public course (Sand Hollow), and a private club most groups can't access (Entrada). This guide breaks down exactly how they compare so your group picks the right destination — or both.
Mesquite's anchor: Wolf Creek — 18 holes carved through 250-million-year-old sandstone canyons, 80 minutes from Las Vegas.
The Quick Answer
Choose Mesquite if: Your group wants a casino-town atmosphere, Wolf Creek is the bucket-list priority, you prefer a compact destination where everything is 10 minutes apart, and you want a lower-cost trip with night-life options.

The Courses: Mesquite's Top 4
Mesquite's strength is its top-end courses. The best 4 are legitimately world-class, and they're all within 45 minutes of each other.
Wolf Creek Golf Club — The headliner. 18 holes carved through 250-million-year-old sandstone canyons with 200-foot elevation drops. Slope 154 (the hardest in the region). Spectacular, unforgettable, and the reason most groups come to Mesquite. $$$$.
Conestoga Golf Club — The thinking golfer's course. Troon-managed, canyon front nine with forced carries, traditional back nine with water features. "The Fence Hole" is the most debated par 4 in Mesquite. $$$.
Coyote Springs Golf Club — Jack Nicklaus design, 45 minutes south toward Vegas. Wide-open desert layout at 7,471 yards. The pure ball-striking test of the region. $$$.
Oasis Golf Club (Palmer Course) — Arnold Palmer design with water, bunkers, and enough teeth to challenge good players. The Canyons Course next door offers a second 18 for groups wanting 36 holes in a day. $$$.
For the budget-conscious, Falcon Ridge ($$), CasaBlanca ($$), and Palms ($) round out the lineup. See our full Mesquite Courses Ranked guide.
Conestoga's desert island green — Mesquite's courses are carved through canyon terrain that looks untouched by humans.
The Courses: St. George's Top 5
St. George's advantage is depth. The top 5 are all nationally ranked, and there are another 8 courses that would be the best course in most towns.
Black Desert Resort — Utah's #1 ranked course. Lava-field landscape, luxury resort, forecaddie included. PGA TOUR and LPGA players have competed here. $$$$. The premium experience.
Sand Hollow Championship — Utah's #1 public course. The back nine (holes 11-15) plays along 200-foot canyon cliffs — three holes on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Holes list. Plus a 9-hole Links Course and a Wee par-3 Course on the same property. $$$.
Entrada at Snow Canyon — Private club, accessible only through stay-and-play at the Inn at Entrada. David McLay Kidd redesign (the Bandon Dunes architect). Lava-field finish (holes 15-17). Golf Digest "Best Transformation" 2022. The course nobody else can book. $$$$.
The Ledges Golf Club — On-course luxury villas for stay-and-play. Matt Dye design at the base of Snow Canyon State Park. Links front nine, dramatic canyon back nine. The best group lodging setup in the region. $$$.
Copper Rock Golf Course — Excellent value near Sand Hollow. Red rock scenery, well-maintained, slope 140 (the hardest in St. George). A sleeper pick that many groups add as a third or fourth round. $$$.
For value rounds, Coral Canyon ($$), Sunbrook (27 holes, $$), and Sky Mountain ($$) offer solid golf at accessible prices. See our full St. George Courses Guide.
Sand Hollow's Devil's Throat — St. George's courses feature cliff-edge holes, lava fields, and red rock canyons you won't find in Mesquite.
Lodging: How They Compare
Mesquite Lodging
Mesquite's lodging centers on casino resorts and one standout private mansion. CasaBlanca Resort is the default — casino, pool, restaurant, and an on-site golf course, all in one place. Eureka Casino Resort is the budget pick. For groups of 8+, Golfer's Paradise Mansion changes the math completely — a 6-bedroom private estate with pool, game room, and BBQ where the per-person cost is often less than a hotel room. See all Mesquite lodging options.
St. George Lodging
St. George has far more variety. Chain hotels (Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn, Hyatt Place), stay-and-play resorts (The Ledges, Sand Hollow Resort, Inn at Entrada), and 127 vacation rental properties ranging from 2-bedroom condos to 8-bedroom estates. For large groups, vacation rentals near the courses are the move — see our Hotel vs. Vacation Rental Guide.
The Vibe: Casino Town vs. National Park Gateway
This is often the deciding factor. Mesquite is a small Nevada casino town — three casinos, a handful of restaurants, and not much else after dark. That's not a knock — for groups who want to play poker, hit the blackjack table, and have drinks at the casino bar after a day of golf, Mesquite delivers exactly that. It's uncomplicated and fun. Nevada liquor laws mean drinks flow freely and late.
St. George is a growing Utah city with a different personality — outdoor recreation, family-friendly, restaurant scene that's expanded significantly in recent years, proximity to Zion and Snow Canyon State Parks. Utah alcohol laws are more restrictive (lower ABV beer in some settings, no happy hour specials, food required with some drinks), but restaurants and bars are plentiful. For groups with mixed interests — some golfers, some hikers, some who just want to relax by a pool — St. George offers more variety beyond the course.
Budget: What Does Each Trip Actually Cost?
| 3-Day Trip (per person) | Mesquite Budget | Mesquite Premium | St. George Budget | St. George Premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lodging (2 nights) | $120–$160 | $200–$300 | $140–$200 | $250–$400 |
| Green Fees (3 rounds) | $150–$250 | $300–$450 | $150–$250 | $350–$600 |
| Food & Drinks | $100–$150 | $150–$250 | $100–$150 | $150–$250 |
| Estimated Total | $370–$560 | $650–$1,000 | $390–$600 | $750–$1,250 |
Budget trips are roughly comparable between the two destinations. The premium gap widens because St. George's top courses (Black Desert, Entrada) are pricier than Mesquite's (Wolf Creek, Conestoga). For groups on a strict budget, Mesquite edges out. For groups willing to spend on the premium courses, St. George delivers more variety at the top end. Our group packages bundle everything into a single per-person price — request a quote with your budget range and we'll build the right trip.
Entrada's lava-field finish — the kind of exclusive access that only St. George offers. Mesquite has nothing comparable.
The Best of Both: Why Most Groups Play Both
Here's the thing we tell every group: they're 40 minutes apart. If you have 4+ days, there's no reason to choose. Start in Mesquite for Wolf Creek and Conestoga, then drive to St. George for Sand Hollow and Black Desert (or Entrada, or The Ledges). You get the canyon spectacle, the casino nights, the cliff-edge golf, the lava fields, and the national park proximity — all in one trip.
Our most popular itinerary is the 4-Day, Two-Destination Trip: 2 nights in Mesquite (Wolf Creek + Conestoga + warm-up round), drive to St. George, 1-2 nights (Sand Hollow + one more), then home through Vegas. It covers the best of both destinations and runs $500-$900 per person depending on course selection and lodging tier.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far apart are Mesquite and St. George?
About 40 minutes on I-15. It's an easy drive through the Virgin River Gorge with dramatic scenery. Many groups split their trip between both destinations — 2 nights in one, 1-2 in the other.
Which destination has better courses?
St. George has more nationally ranked courses (Black Desert #1 in Utah, Sand Hollow #1 public, Entrada Top 5 private). Mesquite has Wolf Creek, which many golfers consider the most visually spectacular desert course in America. If "best single course" is your priority, both have a claim. If "best collection of courses" matters, St. George wins on depth.
Can I do both in one trip?
Absolutely — that's our most recommended itinerary. A 4-day trip typically covers 2 courses in Mesquite + 2 in St. George, with lodging in both. See our 4-Day Itinerary Guide for the full day-by-day breakdown.
Which is cheaper?
At the budget level, they're similar. Mesquite has a slight edge because Wolf Creek is less expensive than Black Desert, and casino resort lodging can be quite affordable. At the premium level, St. George is pricier because of Black Desert and Entrada. Our group packages optimize cost regardless of destination — request a quote with your budget and we'll build the best trip for the money.
What about alcohol in Utah?
Alcohol is available throughout St. George — restaurants, bars, golf course grilles, and liquor stores all serve it. Utah's regulations are slightly different from Nevada (no happy hour promotions, food sometimes required with drinks at certain establishments), but in practice your group won't have trouble getting drinks. The on-course beverage carts run at all major courses. If unlimited casino-bar access is important to your group's trip culture, that's a Mesquite advantage.
Which has better weather?
Nearly identical. Both sit in the high desert of the Virgin River Valley with 300+ days of sunshine. St. George is slightly higher elevation (2,800 ft vs. Mesquite's 1,600 ft), so summer highs are a few degrees cooler. Winter lows are similar. Both are year-round golf destinations.
